Discussions in Stockholm are highest-profile negotiations since Putin and Biden met in June

The top diplomats of the US and Russia have held talks in Stockholm amid fears that Vladimir Putin is preparing to launch an invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.

The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, and the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, traded threats before a 40-minute meeting whose short duration indicated there was little chance that the talks had produced a breakthrough.
